課程概述 |
In graduate labor economics II, students have already master the uses the five econometric techniques, and are familiar with the issues that may jeopardize our causal inference, and the pros and cons of potential solutions. In this class we will try to extend our reach with one more set of tools: experimental methods. Armed with these weapons, we will march into the unconventional world of economics, and see how far we can go. Our purpose is to see how to use economics to understand the real world, ie: how people react to incentives. We will explore many exotic topics, such as crime, influenza, media influence, time discounting, reference points, other than traditional labor economics. |
課程目標 |
At the end of the course, students should have an understanding of (1) how experiments are designed and run, (2) working knowledge of major findings of the experimental and behavioral literatures, and (3) how these findings and new experiments can help workers and firms. |
課程要求 |
(1) Class Presentation 1 (45%): (a) a 40 mins presentation on an assigned paper(s) or of your own interest, from our reading list, and (b) a 10 mins presentation on a "behavioral mystery" you encountered in everyday life
(2) Class Presentation 2 (45%): a 30 to 40 mins presentation on your own research (peer grading, too). Required components:
i. an empirical or experimental presentation with introduction,
ii. literature review,
(A) If the presentation is empirical it should also include:
iii. data description,
iv. complete results with clear identification strategy, and
v. discussion and conclusion (point out the potential flaws of your paper and suggest ways which may help to mitigate them)
(B) If the presentation is experimental it should also include:
iii. power calculations and proposed budget,
iv. some motivating theory with clear experimental design to test it, and
v. discussion and conclusion (point out the potential flaws of your paper and suggest ways which may help to mitigate them).
(3) Class Participation (10%): active participation and discussion in the classroom, extra credit will be given to those who give helpful comments to other students’ presentation.
